About Pat Prince

Patrick Prince is a corporate trainer and management consultant specializing in workplace violence prevention, “for cause” drug testing, conflict resolution, workplace substance abuse, trauma response, and other related occupational health and safety issues. Unlike many consultants who market risk mitigation and workplace violence programs based on their experience reading about cases, Mr. Prince has been in the field for over 30 years conducting threat assessments and designing risk mitigation plans. Combining a solid academic background with decades of ‘real-world’ experience, Mr. Prince is able to assess risk and craft intervention strategies that allow the client to effectively address difficult situations as fast as safely possible.

Patrick has consulted on more than 1,500 cases of threatening situations or acts of violence in the workplace for clients including numerous Fortune 500 companies, government agencies, and educational institutions. These cases include a wide array of situations ranging from hostile intimidation, harassment and verbal threats to physical assaults, acts of sabotage, felony stalking, discharging firearms in the workplace, active shooter response, and on-the-job homicide.

In addition, Mr. Prince is federally certified as a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) Instructor.  As a specialist reserve officer with the Los Angeles Police Department, he has served as an instructor with the DRE program since 1987.  He also instructs with LAPD’s Narcotics School and other specialized trainings.  He is a recognized expert in the articulation and application of “reasonable cause” for workplace drug testing and he has trained over 10,000 supervisors in a variety of industries to identify and confront the suspected substance-abusing employee. Over 12,000 employees have attended his drug awareness presentations. Mr. Prince is currently under contract or has worked with several city and State of California agencies for other program development, training, and consultation. He has been on the faculty of Los Angeles City College for 20 years where he is an instructor in the Drug and Alcohol Counselor Certificate program.

A co-developer of the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power trauma response program, Patrick has served on the Board of Directors for the Association of Traumatic Stress Specialists and also chaired a task force on occupational trauma for the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies.  Mr. Prince is currently serving as the First Vice-President of the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals (ATAP) after having been elected to serve as President of the Los Angeles ATAP Chapter.  He recently served on the joint ASIS-SHRM task force to develop national standards and guidelines for workplace violence prevention that was published in October 2011.  Mr. Prince is an active participant in TARGET, the FBI sponsored violence prevention program for institutions of higher education.

Mr. Prince has been a primary responder to several high-profile incidents involving multiple workplace homicides including the United States Post Office, Dana Point, CA (May, 1993), the City of Los Angeles Piper Technical Center (July, 1995), the United States Department of Agriculture, Port of Los Angeles (April, 1998), and the City of Los Angeles Bureau of Street Services (February, 2005).

Trusted by organizations of all sizes, he has also designed and conducted violence prevention training programs for numerous organizations, both in the private and public sector. Patrick has trained over 35,000 managers, supervisors and employees in organizations such as the City of Los Angeles, the U.S. Postal Service, the U.S. Department of Agriculture as well as numerous private sector companies on issues of workplace safety, threat management, and the prediction and prevention of workplace violence. Patrick’s comprehensive training programs and consultation style reflects his many years of experience working with all levels of employees. Trainings are designed to be dynamic, motivating, and practical. Patrick has provided briefings on violence prevention training for the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office, the Civil Service Commission and the California District Attorneys Association. Training includes an understanding of OSHA guidelines, work setting assessment and skill building for effective communication and anger defusing techniques.

Patrick has responded to over 200 industrial accidents and other traumatic events. In addition to incidents involving multiple homicides, fatal workplace electrocutions and explosions, severe burns, and armed robbery, Mr. Prince has provided services for organizational recovery following earthquakes, fires, and community riots. Patrick’s trauma services include management consultation on organizational recovery, group debriefings and individual counseling. He also provides training for managers, supervisors, and emergency response teams to enhance leadership and organizational stability during traumatic events.

All of Patrick’s management consultation services reflect a “hand’s on” approach that is prevention-focused and problem resolution oriented. His approach to workplace conflict mediation and intervention allows for early problem identification that enhances overall workplace safety and effectiveness. Mr. Prince has demonstrated his instinctive ability to resolve workplace conflicts, solve problems, and restore work relationships. Consultation includes risk of violence assessment, participation on corporate threat assessment teams, work environment audits, supervisor coaching and ongoing assistance in case management. Patrick’s model is a dynamic approach that broadens the number of risk variables considered and provides for ongoing assessment of a situation rather than relying solely on a ‘point-in-time’ psychological assessment.

Mr. Prince also has extensive professional and public lecture experience, speaking on the topics of workplace violence prevention, leadership, occupational stress, and organizational disaster recovery. Patrick has broad appeal to many diverse audiences and a presentation style that allows even difficult topics to be addressed concisely and distilled effectively. He has served as keynote and motivational speaker for national and international professional conferences and business gatherings, and also served as a subject matter expert in the design and production of training videos regarding occupational trauma, substance abuse, and dealing with difficult people. His media services have included script development, casting, direction and on-camera interviews. Television and radio networks have interviewed Mr. Prince and he has provided court testimony for his expertise on these topics.

Patrick received his Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles. His B.A. in Sociology is from the
University of Southern California.
